Although 'Squid Game' was a huge hit recently, it became known that it did not receive additional compensation from the producer, Netflix, and became controversial.

Representative directors of Korea gathered at the National Assembly today (31st) to revise the Copyright Act so that appropriate compensation can be received in the future.

Kim Han-min, director of 'Hansan', Hong Ik-pyo, chairman of the National Assembly Moon Kwang, Hwang Dong-hyuk, director of 'Squid Game', and former Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Do Jong-hwan are having a conversation.

Famous directors such as Yoon Je-gyun of 'International Market' and Kang Je-gyu of 'Taegeukgi' came to the National Assembly.

It was because of the provisions of this law (Article 100 of the Copyright Act).

"Unless there is a special agreement, it is presumed that the rights necessary for the use of video works have been transferred to the video producer."

According to this law, even if Squid Game is a worldwide hit, there is no domestic legal basis for writers and directors to receive additional compensation from Netflix, the production company.

Kang/Director: Once the work is sold, all rights go to the investor and the production company, so nothing returns to us.]

You will receive a rerun distribution based on the number of views.

Director Park Chan-wook also directed 'The Handmaiden'

The Korean Film Directors' Guild, which has about 500 members, argued that in order to maintain the competitiveness of Korean content, we must also improve the copyright system in line with the activation of streaming services.

Some amendments to the Copyright Act were proposed to the National Assembly today.

There are variables until the passage of the plenary session due to the expected opposition from platform companies, but it seems clear that the direction of respecting the rights of creators is a global trend as additional compensation systems are already in effect in the European Union and other countries.
