The nine-year-old elephant Moyo took up residence at the Thoiry zoo (Yvelines) on Tuesday.
This is the first animal of its species to be welcomed by the animal park for twenty years.
The 3-ton pachyderm arrived from Magdeburg Zoo (Germany).
His transfer and his installation in the Paris region required a complex organization, says
Le Parisien
.
First of all, it was necessary to fit out a container to allow the elephant to travel 1,000 km in the best conditions.
Once at its destination, Moyo, still in its huge transport crate, was hoisted into its enclosure using a crane.
Necessary delicacy
The operation was carried out avoiding sudden movements to spare the animal.
The area reserved for the young elephant will in fact be shared with Thoiry's other pachyderm, Ben, 42.
The compatibility of the two animals had been assessed in advance.
Moyo and Ben will be joined in several weeks by a third elephant from Sweden.
