The Extremely Embarrassing Life of Lottie Brooks

by Katie Kirby, published on August 11, 2022 by Éditions Gallimard Jeunesse.

His favorite quote:

Mom says I'm beautiful, but she's sorely lacking in objectivity.

She would probably say that even if I looked like a potato.

It's nice to keep telling myself that I'm going to make friends, but what my parents don't understand is that no one wants to be friends with a potato.

I mean, what's the highlight of a potato?

You can make fries out of it, and it's good, okay… but I'm not sure fries are very good at making conversation.

Why this book?

  • Because it's the perfect children's novel to end the summer

in style and start the school year in good company.

By good company, I mean a hilarious, drama-queen, dreamy heroine who is terrified of not being accepted and loved by her classmates.

  • Because Lottie's best friend had the nerve to

move to Australia, leaving her alone and friendless to face back to sixth form, so stressful for her.

The heroine wants everything to be perfect and then decides to put everything in place to save the Plan she set herself before the start of classes.

Of course, things may not go as planned...

  • Because the young girl only dreams of friends,

popularity and puberty in this novel whose central themes are entering adolescence and friendship.

However, the heroine is not a stereotype of American teenage movie without relief nor capacity of introspection.

We certainly discover her sometimes naive and superficial, but she is also sensitive, relevant and full of humor.

  • Because the format of the novel is very pleasant to read

but also very accessible to young readers.

This is a diary embellished with black and white illustrations of the heroine who would one day like to be a designer and specialize in comics.

The author herself signs the illustrations in this novel.

  • Because

The Extremely Embarrassing Life of Lottie Brooks

is a fresh and funny novel in which an endearing young girl gradually puts into perspective what is important in life.

Through this dive into her diary, young readers can easily identify with the heroine or find themselves in certain purely preadolescent and timeless issues.

In short, a novel that entertains with bursts of laughter but also teaches us to see beyond appearances.
