An Anglo-Italian couple has achieved a real feat: cycling more than 7,200 km across Europe, in order to design… a bicycle, reports

Daniel Rayneau-Kirkhope, researcher in mechanics, and Arianna Casiraghi, doctoral student in physics, dropped everything to accomplish this somewhat crazy dream.
They built their own cargo bikes so they could take their dog Zola with them.
The couple started their journey in 2019 after plotting their route in the shape of a bicycle on a map.

A message for the climate
The route crossed Italy, Switzerland, Germany, France, Austria, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
But the couple ran into challenges along the way.
The route, for example, took them through Charles-de-Gaulle airport, which forced them to modify the route.
It was then the Covid-19 pandemic that prevented them from crossing borders freely, forcing them to take a break.
Some time later, the Italian injured her knee and had to give up the adventure.
On August 9, the couple therefore left for the third time, which was the right one.
The challenge will have finally been completed in 131 days (non-consecutive) in total.
The couple's goal was to raise awareness of the use of bicycles in a world in full global warming.
“If people see this image, the message we want to get across is: please remember you probably have a bike somewhere,” the couple explained.
“It would be nice if you could use it a bit more, rather than a car, for short trips.
