"The Heirs of the Dragon", the pilot of

House of the Dragon

attracted nearly 10 million viewers (9.986 million viewers exactly) across all platforms (linear broadcast and on the HBO Max streaming platform) in the United States, according to an HBO statement relayed by

The Hollywood Reporter

.

The first episode of the Game of Thrones

prequel

is now the most-watched first episode in the channel's history of any series.

This episode also achieved the best launch for a series on HBO Max in the United States, Latin America and the so-called EMEA region – Europe, Middle East and Africa.

"It was wonderful to see millions of Game of Thrones fans returning to Westeros with us last night," Casey Bloys, chief content officer for HBO and HBO Max, wrote in the statement.

A stronger start than season 4 of “Stranger Things”

The launch of

House of the Dragon

thus precedes the start of season 2 of

Euphoria

, which had achieved the highest ratings on HBO in 2022. According to figures from Samba TV, the first opus of House of the Dragon has dethroned the launch of season 4 of

Stranger Things on Netflix: the

Game of Thrones

prequel

gathered 2.6 million American households in the six hours following its launch, compared to 1.2 million households for the fantasy series of the Duffers brothers.

House of the Dragon

generated the most viewership to premiere on premium cable or streaming in 2022. By comparison, “Winter Is Coming,” the very first episode of

Game of Thrones

had 2.2 million viewers when it aired in April 2011.

The final episode of

Game of Thrones

, seen by 19.3 million viewers in the United States, had left a bitter taste for some fans, suggesting that

House of the Dragon

would not achieve such a good score.

It is clear that the universe created by George RR Martin dominates the audience game!
