There is an artist who has emerged as a 'dark horse' in the domestic art market in the past two years.

That is, writer Kim Seon-woo, who resurrects the extinct bird 'Dodo Bird' on canvas and tells the dream and freedom of modern people.

Nightline Invitation Seat Today (24th), we invited Kim Seon-woo, who is enthusiastically supported by the MZ generation with his lively and sensual image.

Q. After the auction of the entries, the public is very interested…

do you feel it

[Kim Seon-woo / Western Painter: As an artist, receiving so much attention is really a very happy and rewarding thing as an artist.

Also, since you're getting so much attention, I'll have to show you a better work.

The pressure was so great that it was actually very difficult to work.

Also, if I change my thinking, it seems to be an opportunity to think about how I can do better work thanks to such a sense of pressure.]

Q. Held a solo exhibition…

What was the reaction of visitors to the exhibition hall?

[Kim Seon-woo/Western painter: When I do an exhibition this time, I always go to the exhibition and meet with the visitors, but one of the things that I enjoyed the most was that people of all ages came.

From teenagers and 20s, to those who come with their parents, and even the elderly.

Looking at these aspects, I will have to do more inclusive works like this in the future, where my work can embrace various age groups.

That made me think.]

Q. The symbol of the work, 'Dodo Bird'...

what kind of animal

[Kim Seon-woo / Western Painter: Actually, it is a bird that is not extinct now.

They went extinct 300 years ago.

It is a bird that lived on a small island in Africa called Mauritius.

It was originally a bird that could fly.

But now that the island has no ships, plenty of food, and it is peaceful, I have given up flying on my own.

In the meantime, it was first discovered by the Portuguese and eventually went extinct, so the name dodo means fool in Portuguese.

I think it was given that name because it can't fly.]

Q. Why did you choose 'Dodo Bird' as the theme of your work?

[Kim Seon-woo/Western painter: Before I originally painted this dodo bird, I drew a human with a bird head.

I've always thought a lot about people's dreams, freedom, and possibilities.

In my opinion, people can't rediscover their own values according to certain standards in the world, and they just live swept away by this secular world.

I thought about this a lot, and it was also the worry I had the most.

Now, I have been working on such things because I thought that the appearance of a free bird trapped in an inconvenient human body is like modern people today. that you lost

So, I thought that this dodo would convey a message to us modern people.

So, through this dodo bird, we are unraveling the story of our modern people.]

Q. Where do you get your inspiration from and how do you work?

[Kim Seon-woo/Western painter: One of the habits I work with is the habit of reading while I work.

I work while listening by using the function that reads books I listen to through my phone application.

So for me, working time is like reading time.

Now, one of the reasons I do this is because I am telling modern people’s stories through the medium of this dodo, so I tend to accept the stories of our world through reading and get a lot of inspiration there.]

Q. From 5 am Are you starting work?

[Kim Seon-woo/Western painter: I am also an extreme morning person.

Because I think 5 am is one of the purest times of the day.

Because it's before most people start their day and it's the time most people sleep.

That's why I tend to start so early because it's a time when I can fully focus on my work without any interruptions.

It's also because I think it's polite to do what I want to do best and do what I can do best in that time.]

Q. What do you like most about the dodo bird?

[Kim Seon-woo/Western painter: My favorite shape of the dodo is a dodo holding a torch.

In fact, there are so many lights in our modern society, but this torch is a really primitive object, so I came to think that the meaning of lighting the darkness with fire and wood is in some way the attributes of a pioneer.

So in fact, in a world where there is nothing new and there is nothing left to explore, I think that such a pioneering spirit is more necessary for us today.]

Q. Collaborating with multiple brands…

What are the reasons for the various activities?

[Kim Seon-woo/Western painter: I say now that the public and art have come a lot closer, but if you still look at it, I feel that there are many people who find it a little difficult to enter an art gallery or gallery itself, although I am an artist.

But now, from that perspective, collaborating with brands or companies that are really familiar with the public seems to be a great opportunity to break down those barriers.]

Also, we are planning to participate in art fairs in Paris and London in the fall of this October, respectively, and we are now preparing for several collaborations with companies.

Also, I will continue to work hard to become a writer who can run for a long time, both at home and abroad.]
