Performance

by Simon Liberati, published on August 17, 2022 by Éditions Grasset.

His favorite quote:

My life, since I had signed this contract, resembled a trip without return.

I didn't know what the next day would be like, my only certainty being that this state would last until Esther's departure and my death.

For the moment Esther was still there waiting for me quietly lying on the bed, a book on her lap.

When I entered the room she smiled.

She says to me: "I missed you so much my love!"

Why this book?

  • Because love carries within it a part of drift and surge of survival.

This passion between an old writer damaged by alcohol and drugs, by the wanderings of life, allows a lucid and cruel vision of the time which passes in front of the innocent youth promised in the future.

This book is above all a reflection on the acceptance of the time of the past.

  • Because Simon Liberati is a polisher, he wants to know everything about

the history of the Rolling Stones in this particular period and gives us all the little stories that feature the rock legend.

This book is a bible for fans of the band.

  • Because there is this uncompromising eye on our time that

Simon Liberati gives us, not without humor.

An eye both disillusioned and acid, a look at a regression of our society which denied the revolution of the sixties in favor of the comfort of consumption.

  • Because it is a face-to-face between Brian Jones and Simon Liberati,

the author finds common bridges between old age doomed to failure and the malaise of the guitarist who died in 1969 in troubling circumstances.

The relationship he shares with his beautiful daughter, feeds his writing, gives substance to his writings, how far can he go in this similarity of two beings tortured by the fear of the loss of the other.

The essentials in 2 minutes

The plot.

A drifting old writer living a love affair with his stepdaughter, writes a screenplay for a television mini-series about the Rolling Stones from 1967 to 1969. From then on, the periods and lives of this mystical group and that of the writer respond and overlap.

Characters.

The 70-year-old writer and Esther, his 25-year-old daughter-in-law with whom he lives a passion, the Rolling Stones with Brian Jones and a whole tribe that gravitates around the nascent group, the production and film crew.

Places.

France with Paris and a small village in the countryside, London in the 1960s, the road from Paris to the Spain of the Rolling Stones, the winding paths of the narrator.

The time.

Current era, the 1967-69 period of the Rolling Stones, the timelessness of Simon Liberati's literature.

The author.

Simon Liberati is a writer who lives between two worlds: the current world in which his talent comes up against his addictions to drugs and alcohol, and literature, a timeless world in which he draws an inexhaustible source of landmarks.

A prolific author, he won the Prix Femina in 2017.

This book has been read with

admiration.

We don't read Simon Liberati, we devour him or we reject him, there are no nuances in the writing of this genius who perpetuates the legend of the accursed poets, a mixture of romanticism and punk.

A novel that mixes two generations with talent.

A great book by a great author.
