The Public Health Commission has unanimously approved in its session today, at the proposal of the Conference on Vaccines, changes in the current strategy of vaccination against monkeypox, following the new indication of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) extract five doses per vial.

This new strategy will multiply each dose by five.

Thus, in people

over 18 years of age for whom this vaccine is indicated, an intradermal dose of 0.1 ml will be administered (both in pre-exposure and post-exposure) except pregnant women and immunosuppressed who will be administered a dose of 0.5 ml cutaneously

.

The prospectus of the vaccine, Imvanex, does not contemplate childhood vaccination -nor that of pregnant women-, but, being part of the groups in which the disease can develop seriously, the strategy advises informed consent after carrying out an evaluation individualized risk/benefit ratio.

Thus, minors who decide to vaccinate will also be given the normal dose, sources from this body have explained to Efe.

The complete schedule of the vaccine consists of two punctures separated by 28 days

, although the lack of medication forced to give only one;

the new strategy would also allow both to be installed, according to what the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, indicated on Friday.

Despite the fact that the Public Health Commission has agreed this Monday,

Madrid, which continues to be the most affected community, began to apply this strategy as soon as it was endorsed by the EMA

three days ago, as revealed by the Madrid Minister of Health, Enrique Ruiz Escudero, who has criticized that the shortage of vaccines has been a problem from the beginning.

"Now what we cannot do is lose a single minute, not a single dose to continue administering and have this permanent surveillance task to try to take maximum control of the disease, although it is a complicated situation," he argued.

Spain already has 12,240 drugs that arrived in two batches

-5,300 in July and more than 7,000 in August-, but, before the end of the year, it will have an additional 5,000, as reported today by the Ministry of Health.

With them, it will try to stop the outbreak that has already left 6,119 cases -the highest figure in Europe and the second in the world, only surpassed by that of the United States-, 178 hospitalized and 2 deceased in our country.

According to the vaccination plan,

pre-exposure prophylaxis prioritizes those under 45 years of age with high-risk sexual practices

, "fundamentally but not exclusively GBHSH (gays, bisexuals and men who have sex with men) included in pre-exposure prophylaxis indications to HIV (PrEP) or for those who are being monitored for the AIDS virus and who have not had the disease or received the smallpox vaccine before.

Meanwhile, post-exposure is given to close contacts of confirmed cases, especially those with a high risk of serious illness (children, pregnant women and immunosuppressed), as well as health and laboratory personnel with contact with confirmed cases and who have had some incidence in the use of PPE.
