Iwate Prefecture announced on the 21st that 2017 new people were confirmed to be infected with the new coronavirus in the prefecture.
It was the first time that the number of new infections per day reached the 2,000 level, the highest ever.
The total number of infected people is 79,244.
Two deaths were also announced, bringing the death toll to 139.
