It was just a month ago.

On July 18, a violent fire broke out in the town of Brasparts in the heart of the Monts d'Arrée in Finistère.

For several days, hundreds of firefighters took turns to fight the flames which burned 1,771 hectares of vegetation and left a desolate landscape.

On August 6, the fire resumed in the Breton mountain range, further ravaging an already hard-hit site.

In total, 2,858 hectares have been destroyed in the Monts d'Arrée since the start of the fires, according to the Finistère prefecture.

The fires now fixed, life slowly resumes its course.

On Wednesday, three roads closed for a month were reopened to traffic.

These are the D785 between Brasparts and the D11, the D30 from Saint-Rivoal to the D785 and the D42 from Saint-Rivoal to the D785.

Restoring the site is expected to take a year

However, access to trails and forests is still prohibited for hikers and cyclists until August 22 inclusive.

Even if some curious people have already climbed to the top, access to the chapel of Saint-Michel de Brasparts, which miraculously escaped the flames of the fire, is also still prohibited.

According to the department of Finistère and the prefecture, the restoration of the Monts d'Arrée site should take a year.

"All of the restoration work which is the work of man", including "the stumps to be removed, the trees to be replanted, the paths to be restored, the fences to be rebuilt, the chapel to be restored", must be " finalized before July 18, 2023, which will be the sad anniversary of this arson,” said Maël de Calan, president of the departmental council, at the end of July.
