Kuwait criminalizes kratom. Its properties are similar to opium and it destroys health

The Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior has criminalized the substance “kratom” and added it to a law related to combating drugs and regulating their use and trafficking, because it contains opium-like properties.

The administration explained that the General Administration for Drug Control confirmed that anyone who abuses, smuggles, brings or possesses kratom is subject to the law.

Al-Qabas newspaper quoted a Ministry of Interior statement that taking kratom leads to respiratory failure, seizures, psychosis, high heart rate and blood pressure, liver poisoning, nausea, and sudden death due to high poisoning.

The statement called on parents to follow up on their children, raise their awareness of the dangers of narcotics and psychotropic substances, and inform the concerned authorities about their children who abuse drugs, so that they can be attached to the competent authority for the treatment, care and rehabilitation of abusers and addicts.

And kratom is a tropical tree whose leaves contain a substance called mitragenin, which in its effect is comparable to opiates such as codeine and morphine, and kratom leaves were used for a large period to relieve severe pain.

Kratom is taken after being boiled in water and drunk as tea, or chewed or smoked after mixing it with tobacco, or swallowing its capsules. Kratom is used to treat withdrawal symptoms of heroin, morphine and other opiates, and in some cases it is prescribed to treat cough, depression and anxiety, but there is no scientific evidence to confirm that Its effectiveness in combating these diseases.
