Billionaire Elon Musk said his tweet on the social networking site "Twitter" about the purchase of English football club Manchester United, was just part of a "long-running joke".

Musk, CEO and founder of electric car maker Tesla and the world's richest man, had referred to Manchester United in a tweet late on Tuesday.

Elon Musk wrote, "To be clear, I support the left half of the Republican Party and the right half of the Democratic Party!"

Musk added: "Also, I'm going to buy Manchester United, you're welcome."

And soon, Elon Musk's words attracted tremendous attention, and the tweet was republished by more than 36,000 users, and it gained about 200,000 likes in just two hours, according to the British news agency "BA Media".

But when asked how serious he was about buying the club, Musk said: "No, that's been a joke that's been going on on Twitter for a long time. I'm not going to buy any sports teams."

Manchester United have been owned by the Glazers since 2005, and the family's ownership of the club has been repeatedly criticized by fans for the build-up of debts and mismanagement that followed the controversial takeover of the club.

The club also suffered a sharp decline in performance and results in recent years.
