Yamagata Prefecture announced on the 16th that 1,087 people were newly confirmed to be infected with the new coronavirus.
It was the highest number ever announced on Tuesday, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 58,574.
Another death was announced, bringing the total number of deaths in the prefecture to 120.
