Wakayama Prefecture announced on the 16th that 1,387 new people were confirmed to be infected with the new coronavirus.
That's 586 fewer than on the same day last week, which saw the highest number of daily infections to date.
A total of 90,978 people were confirmed to be infected in the prefecture.
It was also announced that two people had died.
The number of severely ill patients increased by one from the 15th to two.
