• The four Breton departments are placed in a state of drought crisis.

  • Due to low water levels, the Brittany region has decided to restrict navigation on its canals.

  • It is thus forbidden to sail on the famous canal from Nantes to Brest in Morbihan.

It is not the light rains that have fallen since Sunday in the region that will change the situation.

Placed in a drought crisis situation, Brittany is sorely lacking in water this summer.

To save resources, water restriction measures are now in force in the four departments.

In particular, it is forbidden to water green spaces and lawns, to fill or drain private swimming pools or to wash cars, boats and other vehicles.

Since Friday, navigation has also been reduced on the Breton canals due to the low water levels observed.

It is on the Nantes-Brest canal, more than 360 kilometers long, that the situation is the most worrying.

Owner and manager of the waterways, the Brittany region has just banned until further notice all navigation on the Morbihan portion of the canal between Redon and Pontivy as well as on the Blavet.

The Ille-et-Rance canal on borrowed time

In Finistère, it is also forbidden to navigate on the upper part of the Nantes-Brest canal, between the municipalities of Cléden-Poher and Carhaix.

On the rest of the canal, navigation remains authorized in the department but “it is reduced to the strict minimum”, specifies the Brittany region.

On the Ille-et-Rance canal, between Rennes and Dinan, it is also still possible to sail.

But until when ?

The water bodies supplying the diversion bays are indeed at their lowest, raising the risk of a ban for professionals and boaters.

"If the announced rains are not enough to recharge them in the days to come, navigation will then be prevented", warns the region.

Despite an “overall low” water level, the situation seems a little less critical on the Vilaine where navigation remains possible between Rennes and Arzal.
