A man dug a hole to rob a bank in Italy... and it was buried in it

A man was buried for eight hours in a tunnel he was digging in Rome with his accomplices, most likely to rob a bank.

"Two men from Naples were arrested for resisting a policeman, and two others from Rome because of the damage that occurred, one of them was in the hole and is now in the hospital," the police information office said.

The media office added that "the investigation is still ongoing," and did not rule out "that they were thieves," noting that it was "one of the hypotheses."

Dozens of firefighters worked to rescue a man who was buried under hundreds of kilograms of dirt and building materials after the tunnel collapse, and to get him out, according to the French Press Agency.

Media reported that police suspected the man and his accomplices, who were standing near an empty shop digging the tunnel under it, were targeting a nearby bank they had planned to infiltrate at the weekend.

The newspaper "Corriere della Sera" indicated that "the thief was stuck for nine hours in the tunnel," while "La Stampa" explained that "the goal was to enter the basement," and "La Repubblica" titled that "he dug a tunnel for theft, but he remained buried."

"No one really noticed because this shop was for rent, everyone thought it was undergoing rehabilitation, plus there was no noise," Micheli, a resident of the building overlooking the collapsed part of the tunnel, told AFP.
