  • Health A study shows how Covid infection makes structural changes in the brain

The drop in infections continues for another week and it seems that the downward trend has spread throughout Europe.

The Ministry of Health has notified

13,582 infections in the latest report, 791 less than three days ago.

Of that total, 7,814 correspond to people over 60 years of age, a group that has also reduced its incidence by 1,214 cases in recent days.

The week began with 6,043 people hospitalized,

today the figure drops to 5,402 and 369 in the ICU,

641 admissions less than three days ago.

2,434 beds less than at the beginning of the month (7,836 people in the August 2 report).

Health notified 12,789 on July 12, that figure today is reduced by half.

Let us remember that the summer began with the highest peak of infections of the seventh wave and as the month of August progressed the epidemiological situation has been improving until the wave is almost over.

This Friday, the

Valencian Community

continues to be the most affected territory with

1,996 positives,

668 less than three days ago.

Followed by the

Community of Madrid with 1,885,

306 less than on Tuesday.

Third place goes to

Catalonia with 1,821,

71 more positives than in the previous report.

As for those who died from coronavirus, Spain reports

236 deaths

in the last seven days, 14 deaths more than in Tuesday's report.

This figure amounts to 111,667 the total number of deaths from the pandemic.

COVID-19 also descends IN EUROPE

The number of

positives detected in Europe fell by 26% during the first week of August,

consolidating the downward trend of the last three weeks.

The

European Center for Disease Control and Prevention

(ECDC) reported yesterday, Thursday, an incidence rate of 632.9 positives per 100,000 inhabitants.

Although, in more specific groups, the cumulative incidence decreases more slowly among the oldest.

The group over 65 years old has a rate of 749.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which corresponds to a decrease of 21% compared to the previous week.

The case notification rate in this age group remains high, at 58 percent of the pandemic high.

Despite a general downward trend in Europe, some countries continue to see increases driven by the BA.4 and BA.5 variants.

The increase in cases has occurred in

countries with lower vaccination coverage,

both for the primary cycle and for booster doses.

As is the case in

Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania and Romania,

these countries have had a higher incidence for more than six weeks.

In general,

during the last two weeks admissions to hospitals and ICUs have decreased,

while hospital occupancy indicators have remained stable.

Of the 28 countries with data on admissions and bed occupancy in ICU health centers up to the 31st (the first of August), seven reported an upward trend in at least one of these indicators compared to the last of July.

The 14-day mortality rate from Covid-19 has decreased during the week.

12 deaths per million inhabitants have been reported, compared to 16.5 the previous week.

Despite the increase observed in countries such as

Bulgaria (three), Croatia (six), Czechia (three), Denmark (one) and Romania (two).

The forecasts for cases, hospital admissions and deaths from Covid-19 provide predictions for weeks 32 and 33. Compared to the previous week, health authorities foresee

decreasing trends in cases as well as in hospital admissions,

instead, the number of deaths in Europe are expected to be stable until the end of week 33.
