After completion of the extinguishing work on the blasting site in Berlin's Grunewald, the site is to be handed over to the police by the fire brigade on Thursday.

A police spokeswoman said on Thursday morning.

"The fire brigade situation then becomes a police situation again," it said in the formal designations of the authorities.

Police experts entered the blast site on Thursday - everything had previously been cordoned off due to the risk of an explosion.

How exactly the work will continue on the site devastated by explosions and fire is not yet clear.

Forensic scientists must inspect, collect and disable ammunition and other explosive devices.

Cartridges had been thrown around by detonations in the fire a week ago, and some old World War II bombs were torn from holders.

Small nests of embers left

In addition, fire investigators from the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) want to clarify how the fire broke out and whether it was possibly arson.

The site must also be secured and guarded to prevent onlookers or ammunition collectors from entering it.

After helicopters had cooled the area from the air with water drops on Tuesday and Wednesday, the fire brigade slowly reduced its operations on Thursday.

The situation is relatively safe, said a spokesman.

The fire itself has been extinguished.

There are still smaller embers, but they do not pose a greater risk.

Tank fire engines are said to continue skirting the area to keep it cool.

The Autobahn 115 (Avus) has been reopened.

The forest remains closed

The fire brigade will collect their hoses, the spokesman said.

The federal police helicopters are no longer there, and forces from other federal states and firefighting robots have also ended their deployment.

About 50 firefighters and helpers from the Technical Relief Agency (THW) are said to be on site.

The adjacent forest around the blasting site remained closed.

The police stored around 30 tons of old grenades, World War II bombs, ammunition and confiscated fireworks on the blast site.

The fire broke out a week ago on Thursday.

Numerous explosions could be heard.

Because of the dangers, the site could not be entered, so extinguishing it took a long time.
