Disney streaming consists of the services Hulu, Espn+, Star+, NHL.tv and the flagship Disney+.

The latter increased its user base by 14.4 million subscribers between April and July this year, giving the service a total of 152 million paying customers.

That number brings Disney to a total of 221 million users across all its platforms, surpassing popular movie and series distributor Netflix by roughly 300,000. And to capitalize on the growing number of viewers, the company is now ramping up monthly costs.

That's how much more expensive it will be

The price increases will mainly affect US users.

The company has announced that it will increase the fee by between 3 and 10.99 dollars (corresponding to 30 and 110 kroner respectively) per month.

Disney will also introduce an advertising-supported version of the service that will cost $7.99, approximately SEK 80, per month.

According to Disney's finance director Christine McCarthy, the advertising service is expected to be popular and the company believes that they will be able to provide "greater choices for the consumer in terms of price and appeal to a larger audience".

Netflix is losing users

Other services have struggled to retain users in times of economic instability.

Netflix, for example, lost 200,000 users in the first quarter of the year, then lost another 970,000 in the following three months.

Over the past year, the company has laid off at least 450 employees in its US offices to cut costs.

Whether Disney's price changes will affect the service in Sweden remains to be seen.
