The war ended sixty years ago, and it left a lasting mark on French and Algerian societies.

In a first book, the historian Raphaëlle Branche

collected the testimonies of Algerian civilians, French from Algeria, conscripts, enlisted and career French soldiers, independence activists from the FLN, the MNA, the ALN, members of the OAS, auxiliaries of the French army, refractory, whose perceptions of events and their emotions she confronted.

In a second book, she interviews former contingent conscripts and their families.

Having left for Algeria to “restore order”, their return has often been marked by silence.
