When examining the effects of a new endoscopic treatment that resects early-stage colorectal cancer using an electric scalpel, there was almost no recurrence, and a high five-year survival rate of approximately 94% was obtained, according to the National Cancer Research Center. etc. have been announced.

It is hoped that it will become a standard treatment in the future.

Colorectal cancer is the most common type of cancer in Japan, and in the early stages when the risk of metastasis is low, endoscopic treatment, which removes the cancer with wires, has been the main treatment, rather than open surgery. The high recurrence rate of 10% or more has become an issue, partly because the cancer cannot be completely removed.

A group led by Yutaka Saito, head of the Department of Endoscopy, National Cancer Center Hospital, had an early stage cancer of 2 centimeters or more in the two years from 2013. Approximately 1400 people who underwent endoscopic treatment were followed up.

As a result, the 5-year survival rate of the patients who underwent ESD was 93.6%, and only 8 and 0.5% of the patients had cancer recurrence, and even those who had recurrence could be resected by endoscopic treatment.

The research group has found that there is little cancer left behind and the risk of recurrence is low, and it is expected that it will become a standard treatment method worldwide in the future.

Dr. Saito said, "We found that ESD, which puts little burden on the patient, can completely cure many people. Since it is applicable to early-stage cancer, it is important to get a checkup and find the cancer as early as possible." .
