An unexpected surprise in a 200-year-old book

A woman who loves to shop for antiques was surprised when she found inside a 19th century book she bought on the Internet folded paper in the form of envelopes containing human hair from that period of time.

Christina Dyer said in a video that quickly went viral on the TikTok platform that she had bought the little brown book, which is believed to be from the Victorian era, from someone on the Internet, and it contains personal letters from 1862, which appears from the elegant calligraphy that it was addressed to A woman named Julia.

But when Christina delved into the pages of the book, she made a rather disturbing discovery - among the pages of the leather folder she found tufts of human hair that were hidden inside folded scraps of paper.

The paper was folded into an envelope and had names and dates written on its face, all dating back to the 19th century.

Christina asked about the interpretation of this, and several interested people answered her, one of them confirmed that this custom was widespread at that period of time and one of them said, "It was common to keep pieces of your hair to give to loved ones, or for parents to keep some of their children's hair if they died."

Another continued, "It was a common thing at the time, to preserve the memory of that person, or to give a piece of their hair as a sign of affection."

A third wrote that they were “collecting poetry from children who died to remember them.” Christina did not say whether she would keep the two-century-old locks or bury them somewhere.
