For SessionLab, Hortense Volle met Montreal artist of Haitian descent Dominique Fils-Aimé.

Portrait of a 37-year-old free woman who, not content with having all the talents, has a speech as poetic as it is militant.

Author, composer, performer, Dominique Fils-Aimé is self-taught and damn gifted: she has the charisma of Nina Simone, the verve of Billie Holiday and the timbre of Etta James.

Just that !

One of the most singular voices of the Belle Province (Quebec), has three albums to her credit.

A trilogy in fact, inspired by the heritage of African-American music.

Each section was designed around a color and a style specific to the period mentioned.

Nameless

(2017) the disc where blues and jazz are highlighted, is blue like the night and the ocean that the slaves crossed from Africa.

(2018) is red with passion and revolt, while its songs are inspired by American jazz of the 1960s. Finally, the yellow of

(2020) symbolizes the liberating and unifying aspect of soul.

A charisma, a technique, a groove, an impressive vocal palette, a discourse as poetic as it is militant, Dominique has it all!

In the fall of 2021, I therefore took advantage of her European tour to meet her in Paris.

She arranged to meet me there at the Canadian Cultural Centre, a space which for half a century has aimed to promote Canadian contemporary creation, in all artistic sectors.

Results ?

His maturity and his humanity left me speechless.
