Birth and founding

On July 27, 2022, a number of former officials in the Republican and Democratic parties decided to form a third party that would attract "worried and disaffected voters" about the dysfunction of the "American two-party system."

The founders cited a 2021 Gallup poll that found that half of US adults described themselves as "politically independent," the highest rate this type of poll has shown since its inception.

Three other parties that have emerged in recent years in response to the increasing polarization within the American political system have merged into the Forward Party.

The first is the "Movement to Renew America" formed in 2021 by former officials in the Republican administrations of four former presidents, the second is the "Forward Party" founded by Yang after leaving the Democratic Party in 2021, and the third is the "Serve America" movement, a group consisting of Democrats and Republicans and independent.

Thought and ideology

The party defined itself as a "central party" between the left of the Democratic Party and the right of the Republican Party, aiming to create a new kind of party that represents the interests of the majority of Americans who "reject division and political extremism."

The new party is based mainly on "giving Americans more choices in elections, more confidence in themselves and their government, and more participation in building their future," and "working to improve the country in a cooperative non-separatist manner that guarantees people's freedom and builds vibrant and prosperous democratic societies."

The party asserts that its principles are based on diverse thinking by "welcoming new ideas and bold conversations on issues", while working to empower leaders to solve society's problems without imposing a "strict political" program.
