The largest man-made forest in Western Europe will bear its scars for a long time.

Ravaged by the fires that hit the Gironde, the Landes forest saw 21,000 hectares of maritime pines go up in smoke in this hot month of July.

If the fires of La Teste-de-Buch and Landiras have been brought under control, the subject of the maintenance of the forest massif remains burning.

On Thursday, the three presidents of the departments of Gironde, Landes and Lot-et-Garonne called for the organization of the general assembly this fall.

Socialists Sophie Borderie, Jean-Luc Gleyze and Xavier Fortinon have already contacted Fabienne Buccio, prefect of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.

For them, these dramatic fires generate questions that will have to be “collectively asked”, “once the ashes have cooled so that in the future, we will no longer be confronted with fires of such magnitude”.

Protect yourself from risks like storms

The elected officials intend to sweep away all the subjects surrounding the maintenance and management of the forest but also the role of the communities to prevent this kind of tragedy from happening again.

"We will have to talk about the relationship between town planning and forest, organization of space, services to the massif, its accessibility, replanting and forest maintenance, vulnerability to other risks such as storms", affirm- they.

The question of fire-fighting equipment will obviously be crucial, while elected officials are calling for "more resources".

During a visit to Gironde on July 20 on the sites of the fires, President Emmanuel Macron had indicated that France should acquire “more” firefighting planes.
