The search for the culprits promises to be complicated.

Ten days after the start of the violent fires which ravaged more than 1,700 hectares of vegetation in the Monts d'Arrée, the gendarmes of Finistère launched an appeal for witnesses.

The investigators thus hope to glean some valuable information allowing them to identify the author or authors of the fire outbreaks which disfigured the ridges to the north of the Armorican massif.

The investigations led by the prosecutors of Brest and Quimper are formal: the two fires which started in Brasparts and Brennilis are of criminal origin.

In Brennilis, the firefighters notably identified two fire starts thirty meters away, reinforcing the thesis of a voluntary act.

In an attempt to find the trace of the arsonists, the Châteaulin research brigade has launched an appeal for witnesses.

Anyone likely to help advance the investigation is invited to contact the gendarmerie by email: temoignage-feu-29@gendarmerie.interieur.gouv.fr.

While France is still plagued by violent fires due to extreme drought and high heat, several suspected arsonists have been identified.

In Gironde, it was a car on fire that caused the start.

In Ardèche, a 44-year-old man admitted to having lit a fire which ravaged 1,200 hectares of vegetation.

In the Hérault, it is a volunteer firefighter who admitted to being the author of several fires.
