Bathing is prohibited on the Italian Riviera: there are

too many bacteria in the water

.

The temporary bathing ban, a surprise to many, was issued in

the late afternoon of July 27

, in the middle of summer, on 28 stretches of the

Emilia-Romagna

coastline , starting with Goro, in the Ferrara area, passing through Pinarella di Cervia (where the alarm was later withdrawn), in the

Ravenna area

, and reaching the

Rimini area, where 26 of the 28 points prohibited

by the mayors are located.

The cause of the measures were the values of the Escherichia coli bacteria that were found to be above the limit values established by law.

The mayor of Rimini, Jamil Sadegholvaad, who leads the group of councilors who want to see things clear, immediately asked the Region for a meeting to solve the matter as soon as possible.

A meeting has already been scheduled for

Friday, July 29

: the urgency, considering that there is a summer season to safeguard after two years of pandemic, is maximum.

"I have asked the Region, Ausl Romagna (responsible for health care), and Arpae (regional agency for prevention, environment and energy), together with the municipalities of the Rimini coast and others in Romagna, to participate in a meeting technique to

analyze and find a solution to the anomaly

of the samples taken by Arpae, which have exceeded the regulatory limits".

Hot weather

A necessary meeting, explains the mayor, because "there is no technical or logical explanation given that, for example in Rimini, due to the drought,

the floodgates to the sea have not been opened

for almost a month and a half, and Hera herself , which manages the integral water cycle, has formally communicated that it has not found any failure or defect in the water and sewage network".

Among the suspects are the

torrid temperatures of recent weeks

: "Some experts have hypothesized an anomalous rise in the temperature of the sea water during this exceptionally hot summer, causing an organic imbalance that would lead to exceeding the permitted values. All this despite the financial commitment of the administration to improve the sewerage network: "Since I have been mayor of Rimini", continues Sadegholvaad, "we have spent

250 million euros on the construction of the

separate sewerage network and on the transformation of the overflows in white water canals.

Risk for the economy of the area

A "mystery", according to the mayor, which "risks

damaging entire territories, entire economies

, for reasons that cannot be identified, at least to date, in rationality".

The phenomenon of bacterial proliferation would have also been recorded in other Italian seas: and also in other places, the reason would have to be sought in the heat wave that has raised the temperature of the sea.

This could have

caused an "organic imbalance"

, says the mayor, which would lead to exceeding the permitted values.

The levels have been confirmed directly by Arpae, who explains how "samplings were carried out that showed high concentration levels of the Escherichia coli bacteria. It is an anomalous situation probably influenced by the high temperatures that are also reflected in the water."

The continuous control began on Wednesday with "the taking of water samples in

fourteen of the twenty-eight points

where elevated levels of the bacteria were found."

On the other hand, on the morning of July 28, the other fourteen samples were analyzed: "Throughout the day we will communicate if the fourteen samples analyzed yesterday have been positive: if so", concludes Arpae,

"we will carry out daily monitoring until the situation recovers"

.

Meanwhile, the first controls have led to lifting the prohibitions of the Cervia City Council, which had prohibited two stretches of sea.
