Sotheby's said the jacket he wore on the historic Apollo 11 mission to the moon in 1969 fetched $2.8 million in New York.

On the front, the jacket bears the emblems of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Apollo 11 mission under the brand name Aldrin.

There is also a US flag on the left shoulder of the jacket, made of a fire-resistant fabric that was used in the manufacture of NASA space jackets after the deaths of three astronauts on the Apollo 1 mission as a result of a fire on board their spacecraft during a test on the ground in 1967.

After the jacket, the summary of the Apollo 11 mission plan was the second most expensive item sold at auction on Tuesday, fetching $819,000, exceeding expectations of $100,000 to $150,000.

Neil Armstrong and Aldrin were the first humans to walk on the moon.

Aldrin, 92, is the only surviving member of the three-man mission crew.
