A man got hold of the heaviest fish again: Even if a woman was allowed to take part in traditional fishing in Memmingen for the first time - in the end the victory went to a man.

The trout caught by Luca Wassermann in the Stadtbach weighed exactly two kilograms, as a spokesman for Fischertag said on Saturday.

The twenty-eight-year-old may now bear the title "Luca the first, the fresh one".

He competed against about 1100 men and Christiane Renz when fishing out.

The event goes back to the fact that the municipal stream used to be fished dry once a year to clean the canal.

According to the association, this tradition can be traced back to the 16th century.

"For the most part (...) most fishermen think it's great that women can now also take part," said Renz.

"For this reason it is actually inexplicable why it was so difficult to fight for this right for me."

There are now many genders who should all have the same rights.

She hopes that next year more people beyond the male gender will join the fishermen's day.

Since 1931, the Fishermen's Day Association, which organizes the festival with thousands of visitors every year, had excluded women from the tradition by statute - with reference to the fact that this had been the custom in previous centuries.

Only after a judgment by the Memmingen district court last year did the fishermen's association change this rule.
