Standing 'nap boxes' for fatigued employees in Japan

A Japanese company is seeking to monetize the marketing of "nap boxes" to counter the problem of fatigued Japanese employees and workers wanting to take a short sleep break during the long daily working hours.

Bloomberg reported that Japanese companies Ituki Corp and Kyogo have already launched vertical "nap boxes" to help promote a healthy office culture to the country.

Long working hours are a popular problem among employees in Japan, and the country even has a term for people who sleep during the day for a full shift or long trip.

According to Seiko Kawashima, Director of Communications at Ituki Corporation,

"In Japan, there are a lot of people who will lock themselves in the bathroom for a while (to take a nap), which I don't think is healthy (..) so it's better to sleep in a comfortable place." .

According to the design, the nap user will sleep in the capsule like a flamingo, standing upright.

The initial design was made to ensure that the head, knees and buttocks are supported comfortably so that the person does not fall.

Marketing is based on the idea that rest agreed with the employer can increase productivity, so this new development may prompt employees in Japan to take short naps throughout the day, and then continue to work in comfort.

"I think a lot of Japanese people tend to work constantly without downtime," Kawashima adds. "So we hope companies can use this as a more flexible approach to rest."
