The drop in polluting emissions from road, maritime and industrial transport, thanks in particular to technological progress, could be partly annihilated by global warming, according to AtmoSud, an air quality monitoring observatory in Paca.

The independent observatory, which assesses the exposure of populations to air pollutants in Paca, released a prospective study on Thursday on the evolution of air quality in 2030 in several French and Italian regions.

The heat waves cancel everything

This “Climaera” study was carried out as part of a Franco-Italian program, under the aegis of the European Union.

"As of this date, there has been a marked improvement in emissions from exhaust pipes, ships and industry, in particular due to technological developments", explains Dominique Robin, Managing Director of AtmoSud, citing in particular the evolution of the fleet automobile in view of the ban on the sale of new combustion engine cars in the EU from 2035.

But, he adds, "the fact that we have more regular heat waves and rising temperatures" will at the same time generate more photochemical pollution and therefore more particles in the atmosphere.

Consequence: in 2030, there will be no decrease in concentration (for ozone or fine particles) but either stability or an increase.

“On the one hand, we are making efforts, we are more virtuous, but all of this will be annihilated by the climate,” he insisted.
