American actress Amber Heard is appealing the verdict in the defamation lawsuit against her former husband Johnny Depp.

"We believe the court made mistakes that prevented a just and fair judgment," said a spokesman for the 36-year-old Heard on Thursday.

He referred to the first US constitutional principle, which protects freedom of expression.

Heard and Depp had accused each other of defamation.

The jury found both guilty in early June.

However, they ordered Heard to pay the Pirates of the Caribbean star more than $10 million in damages, while Depp is said to have paid only $2 million in damages to the actor known from films like Aquaman and The Danish Girl .

Depp sued Heard, to whom he was married between 2015 and 2017, for $50 million in damages.

The reason was a post by Heard for the Washington Post from 2018, in which the actress described herself as a victim of domestic violence.

The actress did not name her former husband, but Depp argued that the allegation was clearly aimed at him and had seriously damaged his career.

Heard responded with a counterclaim against the 59-year-old Depp.
