Two days after an overloaded wedding ship capsized in Pakistan, the death toll is believed to have risen to more than 50.

More than two days after the accident in Punjab province "there is no longer any prospect of finding survivors," a spokesman for the local administration told the AFP news agency on Wednesday.

So far, 26 bodies have been recovered, most of them women and children.

Authorities say a similar number of people are still missing.

The ship sank on the Indus River with over 100 passengers on board.

According to the spokesman, most of the survivors of the accident were men who were able to swim to shore.

Women, on the other hand, are often prevented from learning to swim in Pakistan with its very conservative rules of conduct.
