Briton achieves fame for eating expired food

A British man has become famous on social media for displaying his eating pattern of consuming foods after their expiration date, including eating a fried egg after 73 days of its quality date.

East London-based Gavin Wren says households should think twice before throwing staple foods out of their fridges, which can last much longer than expected.

The man's clips received more than four million views on social media platforms, in a country where the population is experiencing the highest inflation rate in forty years, so that the daily cost of food has become a burden on middle-income families.

Wren reviews on his 54,000-followed TikTok platform what happens when he eats certain outdated foods — many of which go against government safety advice.

And in his day job, Gavin advises organizations on how to make food production more sustainable.

"I've had a lot of messages from people asking if I'm still alive, if I don't post for a day. I'm perfectly fine" so far, he says, explaining that the reason for the strange challenges he shares online is to try to prevent food throwing if it's not needed So.

"I was shocked by the amount of food we wasting.

Among his clips, he appears in one of them eating yogurt 31 days after the expiration date, eggs after 73 days, and scrambled chickpeas after 17 days from the date of use, which he did not stop tasting until he found a microbiologist texting him inside a sample sent to him by harmful bacteria, so he advised him to stop about eating it.

In turn, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) states on its website that the best-before-the-date "is about quality, not safety," while the use-by date "is about safety" and the FSA advises against eating, cooking or freezing any foods past the use-by date.

But Wren says he's only trying to help people "minimize waste" and "work" with food manufacturers on product storage instructions, and "best before use" dates.

Gavin is not advocating people to risk their health by eating food that has outlived its usability or quality, but rather encourages people to use their senses, look at and smell their food before discarding it.
