After the fuss surrounding Christian Lindner's church wedding on Sylt, Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) suggested that the Federal Minister of Finance rejoin the church.
"Obviously, both of them liked the wedding in the church very much," said the CSU chairman of the "Bild am Sonntag".
“Perhaps it is a good moment to rejoin the Church.
That would be a great signal of faith in these times.”
The FDP chairman Lindner and the journalist Franca Lehfeldt got married on July 9 in the Evangelical Church of St. Severin in Keitum on Sylt, although they are not church members.
This sparked criticism, for example from the theologian Margot Käßmann.
In the evangelical magazine "chrismon", Lindner then emphasized the importance of the blessing of the church for his marriage.
“There is something more that points beyond both of us and our life together.
It was important to me to think about that in a service and to receive the blessing.” Lindner also emphasized that pastor Susanne Zingel had encouraged him in his thinking about possibly joining the Protestant church.
He left the Catholic Church at the age of 18.
Prime Minister Söder describes himself as a committed and convinced Christian.
He was a member of the Bavarian Evangelical state synod for several years.
He also told the "Bild am Sonntag" about Lindner's wedding: "I congratulate both of them on their wedding and wish them all the luck in the world."
