At the turn of the year, they disappear.

Then TT shuts down its film criticism and ends with reviews.

- It is a business that we have been proud of and which has been important to us, but which is no longer used as much by our customers, who are all the Swedish news media, says Lisa Abrahamsson, acting editor-in-chief at TT to Kulturnyheterna.

Depending on TT

But several of the country's local newspapers depend on TT's reviews to be able to publish film reviews.

Skånska dagbladet describes that their own film reviews have been reduced since the Mittmedia group, to which Skånska Dagbladet belongs with about forty other newspapers, has been acquired by Bonnier News Local.

- For us, this means that in the future we will probably not be able to offer any film reviews to our readers, says Gunilla Wedding who is the cultural editor at Skånska Dagbladet.

For Skånska Dagbladet, which has its editorial office in Eslöv and prioritises local coverage, TT's decision is worrying.

- We use TT's reviews in both print and digital editions and feel that they are very much appreciated in both channels.

It provides consumer information and readers get the opportunity to follow the discussion around these films.

It is very important material, says Gunilla Wedding.

Pulling down on TT

At TT, the number of reviews has been reduced for several years.

In the autumn, they will be reduced from four to three a week to end completely at the turn of the year.

According to TT, it is not a saving measure, but it is about redistributing resources.

- We will continue to monitor and report on film and television, but invest more in news coverage on the subject instead of film criticism, says Lisa Abrahamsson, acting editor-in-chief.

Can not be replaced

But replacing reviews with news coverage is something that several local newspapers perceive as dubious.

- I do not think at all that news coverage of film and television can replace reviews, because there are two completely different types of material.

Already today, TT has quite a lot of news coverage on the subject, so they already have that bit.

The reviews are a discussion material that is something completely different, says Gunilla Wedding, cultural editor at Skånska dagbladet.

In Sweden's largest newspapers, the editorial offices have their own film critics, but even there critical voices are raised.

- Many critics have left their jobs while the communicators have increased in number, so there is less and less of the critical perspective.

If you look at it in a larger context, it applies to the whole of society.

I think it is very tragic that TT puts down its film criticism, says Maria Domeellöf-Wik film editor Göteborgs-Posten.
