The lunar illumination of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi was designed with a 360-degree smart lighting system, to add a wonderful effect to the mosque's outer perimeter, simulating the effect of moonlight intertwined with clouds.

The lighting system derives its aesthetic and cultural value that is unique to it from others, by programming it with an operating system linked to the “lunar clock”, and the brightness of the light effect changes every two days throughout the Hijri month, simulating the brightness of the moon in its phases, starting with dark blue light coinciding with the crescent, to decrease Gradually blue until it reaches the white color coinciding with the (full moon), and then gradually returns to the dark blue color, which coincides with the disappearance of the moon, starting its cycle again after that.

The captivating effect of lunar lighting on the outer walls of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is complemented by its rich aesthetics, arts and details that have long fascinated the onlookers, to reveal the richness of Islamic architecture and the originality of the Islamic cultural heritage, which in turn is reflected in values that emphasize the principle of coexistence and civilized communication between Islamic culture and others. Each lighting tower contains between 9 and 13 searchlights, and the lunar lighting towers are maintained and cleaned periodically every three months using high pressure water technology.

The unique lunar lighting system is given special care by a dedicated team;

By carrying out periodic and accurate maintenance work, according to well-thought-out plans with best practices and standards.

The recent maintenance work by working on completely updating its system took months of work by a specialized team of 25 people, including engineers, technicians and specialists, who worked throughout the week, 24 hours a day, as the lighting units were replaced with LEDs. The longest life and the least energy consuming, and during the works, the servers were inspected and calibrated, and the lighting was final programmed, using the latest technologies.
