Mysterious disease kills 20 Afghan children

A case of an outbreak of a mysterious disease has killed 20 children in the southern Afghan province of Helmand, director of the provincial media and culture department Hafez Rashid said Wednesday.

He stated that the infected children died over the past two days in Bagran district. "The cause of the outbreak of the disease may be drinking contaminated water."

Some of the injured, including children, are receiving medical treatment at a local health centre, he said, noting that the lack of infrastructure, including health centers, and access to safe drinking water in remote areas of Afghanistan has made local villagers vulnerable to death from treatable diseases.
