The historic district of Le Suquet, close to the Old Port of Cannes, will host a new museum.

Dedicated to contemporary African art, this new place will highlight works from the Jean Pigozzi collection, which since 1989 has brought together more than 10,000 creations.

Mayor LR David Lisnard made the announcement on the occasion of the opening of the exhibition

Bande-annonce, the Pigozzi collection in Cannes

presented at the maritime station until August 21.

The elected official was delighted with "the creation of the first museum in the world" devoted to this collection "thanks to the donation of a large part of his works".

“A new form of museum where things change every year”

“We both see this project as a very lively space, which presents various facets of contemporary African art in all its forms and through its great artists, explains Jean Pigozzi.

Our idea is to offer a new, more fluid form of museum, where things move and change every year.

The site, whose opening date is not specified, is planned over more than 700 m2 in the former Saint-Roch chapel.

With a “permanent exhibition” space of 380 m2, a “temporary exhibition” circuit of 240 m2 and a multifunction space of 100 m2.

The building is located a few dozen meters from a former morgue that the city had already transformed into an artists' residence and an exhibition space in 2016. The Suquet hill also hosts the Museum of World Explorations, on the square of Castre.
