A worm robot for cleaning and maintaining sewage in buildings «Video»

GE Research has discovered an electronic pipe worm, which will play a major role in the care, cleaning and maintenance of infrastructure and sanitation in buildings.

According to the article published in the Fast company website, the worm is a long and soft robot that can clean and even repair pipes without constant human intervention.

In his invention and design, engineers relied on the movement of earthworms and navigation systems in the dark of small organisms such as cockroaches to manufacture the electronic worm as a flexible and independent device.

Engineers used air or oil pressure to expand and contract the artificial muscles to generate movement, in the worm, and two algorithm-powered antennas were implanted to guide the robot and determine where to go (and even create a specific motion map).

The idea is to leave the e-worm in the tubes for a long period of time to perform the necessary maintenance, says Deepak Trivedi, mechanical engineer at GE Research, "You put it in your tube and you'll never have to think about it again.

Because the robot lives there and takes care of your pipes without you having to worry about it.”

The experimental model is used to solve major infrastructure problems over large areas, but due to the possibility of miniaturizing the size of the robot, it may soon make its way into homes, according to the same source.
