British director Sam Taylor-Johnson (Becoming John Lennon, Fifty Shades of Grey) will shoot a biopic about the life of singer Amy Winehouse.

According to Deadline, work on the tape has been going on for several years, but only now it has become officially known.

According to Variety, the project is in the casting stage.

It is not yet known who will play the lead role.

The film will be released by the European film company Studiocanal.

The screenplay was written by Matt Greenhalgh, who had already worked with Taylor-Johnson on the Lennon biopic.

The picture will be called Back to Black - by analogy with the main album in the artist's career.

The film is expected to reveal details about the life and work of Amy Winehouse, who started as an up-and-coming jazz singer from North London and went on to become a musical superstar and a six-time Grammy winner.

The life of a popular vocalist was cut short at the age of 27.

She struggled with alcohol and drug addiction for a long time, but was never able to win.

The Winehouse family reportedly signed on to make the biopic back in 2018.

At the time, the script was supposed to be written by Geoff Dean.

Lady Gaga was considered for the lead role, however, according to the tabloid The Sun, the singer's father Mitchell Winehouse was against her candidacy.

He believed that she was not suitable for the role, despite the rave reviews for the film A Star Is Born.

Winehouse stated that he would not mind seeing someone unknown in the role of his daughter.

“I’m willing to bet that it will be a little-known, young actress from England – a London cockney – outwardly somewhat reminiscent of Amy,” Mitchell Winehouse was quoted by The Sun as saying.

“We want Amy to be portrayed as she was: fun, outstanding, charming and terrible person.

It makes no sense for me to make this film myself, because I am her father.

But it is very important to find the right people, and we will do it.”

After the artist's death in 2011, filmmakers tried to tell her story, but in the end, none of the game projects were completed.

In 2015, director Asif Kapadia released the documentary "Amy", which contained interviews with Winehouse's relatives and friends, videos from the personal archives of the singer's family, as well as unique unknown recordings of her songs.

The film received numerous awards, including an Oscar for best documentary.

Initially, the performer's relatives agreed to shoot a documentary and gave access to archival videos of their family.

But in the process of work, Mitchell Winehouse noticed that the filmmakers are focusing more on the negative aspects of the artist's life, and the frames provided were edited in such a way that they distorted the real facts about the singer, especially in the last three years of her life.

Winehouse's father then stated that his daughter's fans should not take seriously what is shown on the screen.

The upcoming film Back to Black, unlike the Oscar-winning "Amy", received the full support of Mitchell Winehouse.

In addition, the father, mother and other relatives of the deceased vocalist participated in the creation of the documentary Reclaiming Amy, released in 2021 on the tenth anniversary of the singer's death.

You can also learn about the artist's life from the book by Janice Winehouse, Amy's mother.

It tells about the childhood of the singer, the beginning of love for music and the other side of success.

In Russia, the work was published under the title “My beloved Amy.

The story of how I lost my daughter twice."

“A frank, bright and sometimes very bitter story of a mother who adored her daughter, but could not save her,” the annotation to the book says.

Amy Winehouse was born in 1983.

Relatives recall that as a child she loved to listen to Frank Sinatra instead of lullabies, and in the classroom she often forgot and began to sing melodies, which angered the teachers.

Before gaining world fame, the artist managed to create her rap group Sweet 'n' Sour with her friend, work as a journalist on the World Entertainment News Network and solo in the Bolsha team.

Her debut album, Frank, was released in 2003.

Listeners liked jazz in modern processing, and in 2004 the album received a nomination for the BRIT Awards.

The next record of the artist was even more successful.

When creating Back to Black, Winehouse was inspired by the work of musical groups of the 1960s.

The album was released in 2006.

The disc received many positive reviews from critics.

At the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, the album earned five statuettes.

In 2011, the posthumous album Lioness: Hidden Treasures was released, which included previously unreleased tracks.
