The railway line on the right bank of the Rhône, closed to passenger transport for half a century, will reopen at the end of August, between Pont-Saint-Esprit and Nîmes.

The ticket will cost €3 up to 20 km, €6 between 21 and 40 km and €9 beyond 40 km.

This is the first reopening of this type in France, since 2016.

From August 29, Pont-Saint-Esprit and Avignon will be linked by four daily round trips, in 30 minutes, with a stop in Bagnols-sur-Cèze.

It will be extended, once a day, to make the journey between Pont-Saint-Esprit and Nîmes (in 1h10).

By 2026, trains will serve other stops, whose stations will be redesigned.

The cost of this total reopening is estimated at 100 million euros.

It is financed by the Occitanie region, SNCF Réseau (for the redevelopment of stations) and the local authorities served.

Dedicated to freight since 1973

Commissioned in the 19th century, the line of the "right bank of the Rhône" has long been an important railway axis, between Lyon and Nîmes.

It then served 17 stations, over more than 254 km.

But faced with the development of the Lyon-Marseille railway line, taking the left bank of the Rhône, and competition from the car, the decision was taken in 1973 to reserve it for freight.

The Rhone Gard, the second industrial basin of Occitania, has 447,000 inhabitants and represents 225,000 jobs.

According to forecasts, the annual attendance of the new line should reach 200,000 passengers.
