The video-verbalization will extend to the fleet of 571 surveillance cameras installed in Lyon.

This generalization, voted in the municipal council on Thursday, follows an experiment of several months on different sectors of the city conducted "successfully", indicated Wednesday the mayor EELV Grégory Doucet, during a press conference before municipal Council.

“Our approach is pragmatic,” he insisted, explaining that he had noticed a drop in “road violence” during these tests.

“The recidivism rate within 10 days after video-verbalization is 1.1%,” said security assistant Mohamed Chihi on Thursday.

This covers awkward parking, crossing continuous lines, rodeos, failure to respect traffic lights and dangerous driving.

Video surveillance not always protective

The opposition voted for this deliberation, but deemed it insufficient, demanding more resources in video protection.

“You agree to develop the video to police motorists, but […] you refuse to develop it for the thugs who spoil the daily lives of the inhabitants!

“said Pierre Oliver, LR mayor of the 2nd arrondissement.

Mohamed Chihi recalled that an audit on the use and effectiveness of video protection was underway, to "produce knowledge" and "rationality".

It is led by a former magistrate of the Court of Auditors.

"We follow in the footsteps of the Court of Auditors which itself questioned the State" on the need to assess public policies for the use of video protection, Grégory Doucet explained on Wednesday.

"And to my knowledge, the Court of Auditors is not yet a group infiltrated by a majority of the left and environmentalists...", he quipped.

Our VIDEO SURVEILLANCE file

“Dramatic events” have recently occurred “under cameras, we cannot speak of video protection” and these cameras “did not allow us to find the perpetrators”, also affirmed Mohamed Chihi, in reference to the shooting. June 14 at La Duchère, where two young people aged 16 and 20 died.
