How to prevent the accident that cost the life of Jan, a 5-year-old Ukrainian child hit by an electric scooter on June 29 on the Promenade des Anglais, from happening again?

This Friday, the day after the funeral of the young victim and "in a context of increase" in various facts related to these two-wheelers, the mayor of Nice presented a plan "of new security measures" along this axis major.

In particular, he plans to install traffic lights at the level of the densest pedestrian crossings on the cycle path.

Christian Estrosi also demanded that the State “impose everywhere the registration of scooters and motorized bicycles that can go up to 25 km / h” and “leave the possibility to mayors to reserve cycle paths for the exclusive use of bicycles ".

Of repression and works

While waiting for a change in the legislation, the elected official, who recalls that he "has always opposed the establishment of free-floating scooter rental services", announced that he was going to build muscle, "as soon as today", the repression against those who do not respect the Highway Code.

He says he has asked the municipal police to carry out "daily checks", with fines of 35 to 3,750 euros at stake.

At the same time, work will therefore be carried out on the Promenade des Anglais.

In particular at the level of the three pergolas located between the Villa Masséna and the Palais de la Méditerranée.

“Barriers physically separating the cycle path from the pedestrian space” will be put up within ten days, promises the town hall.

Everything to "slow down"

The entire route and "its 40 pedestrian crossings" should be completely "redeveloped and secured within two months".

The city plans to lay “rumble strips mechanically slowing the speed of two-wheelers when approaching” these passages which will be lit at night.

Signage will also be painted on the ground to warn that it is time to “slow down”.

In the denser area, between Gambetta and the Centenary, the town hall will therefore even install traffic lights to alternate the circulation of two-wheelers and pedestrians.

Two days after the fatal accident, the Nice à vélo association had arrested Christian Estrosi on Twitter.

“Why always wait for tragedy before reacting?

You've been told for years that you need to better manage/separate traffic flows.

We've been asking for more checks for years... Are you going to listen to us?

she asked.
