• Cartoonist Laura Pérez, the Spanish hand behind Selena Gómez in 'Only murders in the building'

In a few days we will know the nominees for the 2022 Emmy Awards. Some anticipate not only the nomination for Selena Gómez as an actress but also a historic double statuette for her: an Emmy as a leading lady and another as a producer of

Only Murders in the Building.

Hers Two co-stars of hers on this hilarious series also almost assured her spot among the Emmy finalists.

Although, at this point, two legends like

Martin Short and Steve Martin

do not need nominations or awards.

In addition, the times are very beneficial to Only murders in the building at the Emmys, since the votes on their candidacies for the first season will take place while voters watch the second week by week.

That and

Just Murder is delicious.

The recently released new installment of the series created by

Steve Martin and John Hoffman

(here it can be seen on Disney +) does not make too many changes compared to the first.

The story of the three neighbors who investigate a murder in their building while turning their investigations into a podcast now has a new murder and another podcast.

In fact two more, because the

podcaster

admired by

Mabel, Oliver and Charles

is now also a meta-character of the series.

She is played by none other than Tina Fey, in another display of the convening power of three stars like Gomez, Martin and Short.

She was called at the time by Sting, who lent himself to playing himself in the first season, and now

megastars

like

Amy Schumer

(who also plays herself),

Shirley McLaine or Cara Delevingne.

With them, the level of self-awareness of Only Murders in the Building maintains its elegant and subtle balance between biting satire, endearing story and vaudeville.

The series is, in addition to friendly and smiling, a reflection on loneliness.

It is very difficult to bet on a fiction for pure friendship without falling into kitsch.

Only murders in the building does not do it, relying on Steve Martin's sarcasm and on a Martin Short who takes advantage of his cowardly appearance to drop real barbarities for that little mouth.

While Selena Gomez's remains in a pout that could be sappy but turns out to be not only charming but convincing.

The darkness of her Mabel is one of the best things in a comedy that, when she wants to, knows how to be drama.

We see her mature in the series, Oliver and Charles take off the armor that so many New Yorkers confuse with personality.

The sickening speed of the city of skyscrapers is not present in Only murders in the building, but its cruel commitment to the most cynical individualism is.

A building full of lonely people in a city full of lonely people.

And a ray of light and hope in the midst of so much coldness and rude push.

People dying is the least of it.

Mabel, Oliver and Charles is the gang we all want to belong to.

Because, as they said in The Crystal Ball, you can't do it alone, with friends you can.
