"Golmud" is a Mongolian transliteration, which means "a place with dense rivers". It is located in the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the southern edge of the Qaidam Basin.
The Chaerhan Salt Lake and the East-West Taijiner Mining Area in the Golmud area are 50 times the size of the Sears Salt Lake in the United States. They are the largest magnesium-lithium salt deposits in China, so they are also known as China's "Salt Lake City".
