After two editions disrupted by the Covid-19 crisis, the Avignon festival starts this Thursday July 7 and ends on Tuesday July 26.

This 76th edition will be the last for Olivier Py as director.

You can find the full program on the festival website.

We offer you here a necessarily subjective selection of the main events of this 2022 edition.

Credit to the director to begin with.

The one who will give way to Tiago Rodrigues at the end of the festival strikes another big blow by offering a ten-hour marathon piece:

My exalted youth

.

It will be played at the Lycée Aubanel Gymnasium from July 8 to 15.

It was there that Olivier Py was noticed with his play La Servante in 1995 which lasted twenty-four hours, recalls

L'Obs

.

But this is not the longest show of this edition.

The Nest of Ashes

, by Simon Falguières, which will be played from July 9 to 16 at

La Fabrica

, lasts thirteen hours.

The Russian Serebrennikov in opening

Kirill Serebrennikov, whose film Tchaikovsky's Wife was in official competition at the last Cannes Film Festival, will launch the festival in the Cour d'Honneur of the Palais des Papes.

With

The Black Monk

, the Russian artist has adapted Chekhov's fantastic short story.

The playwright Tiago Rodrigues, future director of the Avignon festival, will be present as an author with

Iphigénie

, a play directed by Anne Théron at the Opéra Grand Avignon, from July 7 to 13.

Anima

by Noémie Goudal and Maëlle Poésy, a highly anticipated video and musical device during this festival, will be played at the Lambert collection from July 8 to 16.

For his part, the Chinese director Meng Jinghui is presenting

The Seventh Day

, a play that focuses on life after death, at the Cloitre des Carmes, from July 18 to 25.

Always Shakespeare

It's hard to imagine an Avignon festival without Shakespeare.

Alessandro Serra will thus adapt

La Tempête

, which becomes in Italian with French surtitles

La Tempesta

, performed at the Opéra Grand Avignon, from July 17 to 23.

For his part, Christophe Rauck offers

Richard II

from July 20 to 26, at the Lycée Aubanel Gymnasium.

The forty shows presented in the "In" are often sold out.

But you can console yourself with the Off festival, the largest live performance market in France.

This 2022 edition will offer 1,570 shows in 138 locations with nearly 6,000 artists on stage.
