Jordan.. Beggars attack "anti-begging" with knives and threaten to kill them

Beggars with knives and stones attacked an anti-begging team in the Jordanian capital, Amman, while trying to catch them near a traffic light in the Deir Ghbar area.

A beggar also threatened, through a telephone call to the anti-begging teams, via the hotline, to kill the employees, after insulting them in obscene terms that offend dignity and outrage modesty.

In the details, when trying to catch one of them, the other beggars threw stones at the employees and tried to assault and insult them, and then they fled.

The Ministry of Social Development submitted an official report to the Public Prosecutor regarding the incident and the death threat, in order to preserve the safety and security of the employees of the anti-begging teams.

The ministry called on citizens to stop providing any money to beggars and those who illegally obtain it by claiming illness or need, and to support the efforts of the ministry and its partners from public security, the Amman Municipality and municipalities in order to reduce this phenomenon that harms society and harms its image and deprives chaste families of assistance.

The percentage of children who were caught among beggars in Jordan this year was 32.81%, according to data from the Ministry of Social Development, before the law amending the Penal Code came into force.

4,834 beggars were arrested this year, including 1,586 children, according to the statement of the Ministry's Assistant Secretary-General for Development and Welfare Affairs Mahmoud Jabour.

Jabour told the Jordanian channel, the Kingdom, that the number of children arrested for beggary reached 5800 during 2021, out of 13,558 beggars.
