China's soil erosion area intensity "double decline"

China Newspaper, Beijing, June 29 (Reporter Wang Hao) Recently, the Ministry of Water Resources organized and completed the national soil and water loss dynamic monitoring work in 2021. The results show that in 2021, China's soil and water loss area intensity will "double decrease" and water and wind erosion will "double decrease" The situation was further consolidated, the soil erosion situation continued to improve, and the ecological environment continued to improve.

The data shows that in 2021, the soil erosion area nationwide will be 2,674,200 square kilometers, a decrease of 18,500 square kilometers compared with 2020.

Among the areas of soil erosion at various intensity levels, the proportion of areas with severe and above grades in the national soil erosion area decreased to 18.93%, a decrease of 0.55 percentage points compared with 2020.

Among the soil erosion areas in the country, the hydraulic erosion area was 1,105,800 square kilometers, a decrease of 14,200 square kilometers compared with 2020; the wind erosion area was 1,568,400 square kilometers, a decrease of 4,300 square kilometers compared with 2020.

From the perspective of the overall pattern, soil erosion gradually decreased from the west to the east. The areas of soil erosion in the east, middle and west all decreased, with a large reduction in the western region and a large reduction in the central and eastern regions.

From the perspective of major national strategic regions, soil erosion in major national strategic regions such as the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the Yangtze River Economic Belt continued to improve.

Compared with the results of the first national water conservancy census in 2011, the areas of soil erosion in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the Yangtze River Economic Belt, and the Northwest Loess Plateau have decreased by 16%, 13%, and 13%, respectively, and the soil erosion has been significantly improved.

From the perspective of the major river basins, the soil erosion conditions are all showing a trend of improvement.

The area of soil erosion in the Yangtze River, Yellow River, Huaihe River, Haihe River, Pearl River, Songliao River Basin (slices) and the southwestern river basins decreased by an average of 1.19% compared with 2020, of which the Huaihe River Basin decreased by 2.71%.

In addition, by strengthening the supervision of soil and water conservation, the prevention and control of anthropogenic soil erosion has achieved remarkable results, and the incidence of soil erosion in anthropogenically disturbed plots has been reduced by about 10 percentage points compared with 2020.

The Ministry of Water Resources will take forest and grassland as the focus of “reducing” the area of soil erosion in the future, strengthen protection and restoration, increase the coverage of forest and grassland vegetation with medium coverage and below, and give full play to the function of soil and water conservation of forest and grassland; In terms of the important aspect of "downgrading" the intensity, we should focus on comprehensive management of the Yellow River sandy and coarse sand areas, especially the concentrated source areas of coarse sediment, vigorously carry out the construction of high-standard check dams, and increase the management of cultivated land erosion ditch in the black soil area of Northeast China.
