• A solitary wild boar has been living on a natural site for years in a town in the Somme.

  • For security reasons, the prefecture decided to transfer the animal to an enclosure or a park.

  • Attached to their mascot, residents have formed a collective to defend the freedom of the animal nicknamed “Titine”.

She took the “Titine” confidence.

On May 17, the prefecture of the Somme announced its desire to capture a sow (the female wild boar) which squats almost permanently in the town of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme.

The security argument put forward by the State services convinced neither the animal, which remains elusive, nor the collective "Titine en baie", which intends to keep its mascot.

"Faced with the semi-permanent presence of a sow on the Cap Hornu site in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, it appeared necessary to prevent any danger to herself or the local residents", advanced the sub-prefect of 'Abbeville to justify its desire to transfer the wandering boar to an animal park in Seine-Maritime.

In addition to the potential risk for the inhabitants of crossing a wild animal, the authorities underlined the damage caused by Titine in the park of a hotel complex.

But the inhabitants of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme reacted strongly against this hypothesis, forcing the prefecture, veterinary services, elected officials and the collective for Titine to meet in early June to find an alternative solution.

The on-site enclosure solution

It was then considered to keep the sow on the municipal territory, but in an enclosure that would be specially built for her.

Except that time is running out, the authorities being determined to solve the problem before the summer season and its influx of tourists.

On June 13, a veterinarian went to the area where Titine usually walks.

But as if she had sensed the confusion, the sow remained untraceable.

This Tuesday, the prefecture announced that the enclosure solution would be implemented.

The structure will be built by the volunteers of the collective, supported by the town hall.

Except that the most complicated thing in this story is to catch Titine and make him accept his new constrained environment.

It's not win.
